LIBERTY DOUBLE EAGLE
Liberty Double Eagle (1849-1907)
Following experimentation by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, several $20 pieces, undoubtedly
intended as patterns, were produced in 1849. Only one example survives today of the initial coinage, the
piece exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution. In the following year, 1850, double eagles were first struck
for circulation. With modifications, Coronet or Liberty Head double eagles were minted from 1850 through
1907. In the latter year the Saint-Gaudens design made its debut, and was continued through 1933.
