Peace Dollars (1921-1935)
The silver dollar was conceived by both Alexander Hamilton, whose ideas on coinage were
adopted by Congress, the Mint Act of April 2, 1792, as our first federal coinage system, and by
Thomas Jefferson who based its necessity on the popularity of the Spanish silver dollar (eight
reales) already circulating widely in the United States.
Peace silver dollars were struck from 1921 to 1935, and again later (the 1964-D issue which was
never released). These, too, were made in large numbers, and dollars of the 1921-1935 era are
exceedingly popular today.
