STANDING LIBERTY DOUBLE EAGLE
Standing Liberty Double Eagle (1907-1933)
With modifications, Coronet or Liberty Head double eagles were minted from 1850 through 1907. In the
latter year the Saint-Gaudens design made its debut, and was continued through 1933.
Among the double eagles of the Liberty head type, which were minted through 1907, there are many
rarities, including 1854-0, 1856-0, the Paquet issues of 1861, and all Proofs. 1883, 1884, and 1887
Proofs are particularly sought after as no Philadelphia Mint coins were struck for circulation in those
years.
A number of the issues dated in the 1920s are scarce to rare. Included are 1920-S, 1921, all issues
after 1928, and all mintmarked issues after 1923. Particularly rare is the 1927-D.
Following the recall of gold coins in 1933 and their subsequent melting, it was learned that many issues
of the 1920s and 1930s, despite high mintages, were rare. After World War II, Switzerland, Argentina,
and other countries released large quantities of double eagles and other American gold coins from
their vaults, thereby providing a supply for collectors. Still, the aforementioned issues of the late 1920s
remain scarce to rare.
